The Snack: Sliced apples dusted with cinnamon
The Story: Recently Laurel was offered plate of tart, cinnamon dusted apples while getting a hair cut at Fekkai in Soho. It reminded her of when we used to watch our grandmother make apple pie. We would wait for the moment when she would hand us one of the sugar-covered apple slices meant for the pie's filling.
The Mix: Steel-cut oats with banana, hemp seeds, and dried blueberries and cranberries
The Story: Most of us East Coasters need a boost right about now, so I'm topping today's oats with hemp seeds. These tiny superfoods look like sesame seeds, have a nutty taste, and are packed with protein.
The Mix: Steel cut oats, dried cherries, hazelnuts and shredded coconut
The Story: Reading the local paper while fueling up on this hearty bowl of oats last Saturday morning, I came across a listing for a local 5k race. Always up for impromptu exercise, SJ and I decided to throw on our running shoes and jump in the race.
The Mix: Oatmeal Topping Bar
The Story: When serving breakfast to a group of athletes, it's hard to satisfy everyone's likes and dislikes, allergies and special diets. That's why when I have friends over to watch the NYC Marathon next weekend, I'll set up a top-your-own oatmeal buffet for breakfast.
Snack: Grilled cheese with sliced pears
Timing: I eat this snack as my second breakfast since it is savory and my first breakfast is always sweet. It would also make a good afternoon snack, eaten a few hours before running.
Why I like it: It allows me to eat a comfort food in between workouts without feeling sluggish.
