The Mix: Steel-cut oats with banana, hemp seeds, and dried blueberries and cranberries
The Story: Most of us East Coasters need a boost right about now, so I'm topping today's oats with hemp seeds. These tiny superfoods look like sesame seeds, have a nutty taste, and are packed with protein. They have more omega-3s and omega-6s than any other nut or seed and contain all 21 essential amino acids. In case you're wondering, hemp seeds don't contain THC like their illegal cousins. But I hope they'll cure some cabin fever and provide a much-needed recharge.
The Workout: A trail run with a friend who was supposed to run the marathon, followed by post-Sandy tree clean up along our road.
The Instructions: Follow the directions on the McCann’s steel-cut oats can: “Into four cups of briskly boiling water sprinkle one cup of oatmeal, stirring well. When the porridge is smooth and beginning to thicken, reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.” Five minutes before the oats finish cooking, stir in one mashed ripe banana and 1/4 cup each of dried cranberries and blueberries. Top each bowl with a teaspoon of hemp seeds.
