Sliced Apples and Cinnamon

The Snack: Sliced apples dusted with cinnamon

The Story: Recently Laurel was offered plate of tart, cinnamon dusted apples while getting a hair cut at Fekkai in Soho. It reminded her of when we used to watch our grandmother make apple pie. We would wait for the moment when she would hand us one of the sugar-covered apple slices meant for the pie's filling. Sharing this memory with Laurel has inspired my new favorite fall snack. I squeeze a little lemon over a sliced apple, to prevent browning and add an extra bite of tartness. I skip the sugar and follow Fekkai's lead with the cinnamon. I read that cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar, which makes this an ideal pre-workout snack. I try to stay away from anything that may cause a pre-workout sugar crash.

The Timing: I eat this as an afternoon snack, up to 45 minutes before a light afternoon run or swim. For a post-workout snack, I’ll add a small dish of cinnamon-dusted plain Greek yogurt. This Thanksgiving I'll try to tempt my cousins with this snack a few hours after dinner. Hopefully it will prevent our traditional evening trek back to the dessert table.

How:Slice a Granny Smith (or any crisp, tart) apple, leaving the skin on. Rub the juice from one lemon slice over the apple slices. Sprinkle a light dusting of cinnamon over the cut sides of the apple.
