When my twin sister Laurel and I were competitive swimmers in high school, our team practiced three days a week at 5:30 a.m. Iβd set my alarm at 4:47, tiptoe downstairs to the dark kitchen, and make myself breakfast. Iβd alternate between maple and brown sugar instant oats and frozen cinnamon rolls reheated in the microwave. No joke! Meanwhile, Laurel stayed in bed until a minute before our car pool pulled into the driveway, fumbled for her cap and goggles, and ate a piece of peanut butter toast or banana on the way to the Y.
