Turkey Trots have become as much as a tradition for us as the Thanksgiving dinner itself. Year after year, we’ve kicked off the holiday weekend with a running road race, usually in freezing cold conditions. Some years we’ve taken our races seriously (see 2007 and 2011 below) and others we’ve just gotten out and participated (see 2012 and 2014).
Either way, we’ve always arrived at our Thanksgiving gathering starving as a result, choosing not to eat after the race with the feast just hours away. So not a good idea, unless you want to be the one who clears out the appetizer table before anyone can say Pig-In-A-Blanket (that was me one year).
This year we’re starting a new tradition: The Turkey Trot Brunch. The plan is to have a small post-race meal to refuel our depleted muscles and get us through to the main event without hunger pains (and the over-eating that follows). To keep the cooking and clean up to a minimum, we’re sticking to a few easy to prepare, yet festive and seasonal dishes.
Here’s what’s on our menu, recipe links are in red:
- Coffee/Tea
- a big bowl of satsumas or clementines
- Harvest Spiced Toast with Apples
- Greek Yogurt with Persimmons and Pumpkin Seeds
- Melissa's Pumpkin Waffles
Oh, and for fun and because it’s raining and I have a doctor’s ordered sit on the couch day, I decided to dig up the results from all the turkey trots we’ve done. There are a few gaps because some results seem to have disappeared from the internet.
We wish you all the best of luck with your Turkey Trots. And for the first-timers, we hope you enjoy it. Earn your turkey!!
