As part of the Triathlon Business International Conference (an annual triathlon industry gathering), a new company called Athletepath staged their first annual Transition Challenge. I was invited to participate along with about 10 other professional triathletes. I really had no idea what to expect and was taken aback when I got to the location - the rooftop of the Marriott in Marina Del Ray with stunning 360 degree views of Los Angeles at sunset. The race (a slip'n'slide into a spin bike into a short sprint run) was the entertainment (enta-tainment) for the evening's cocktail hour. The Athletepath crew set up the course, bikes up on a stage and even a finish line tape and divided us into heats. Then the winners of the heats went head to head in the final, all staged right amongst the cocktail party! I ended up outsprinting Jordan Rapp to the tape and somehow ended up with the fastest qualifying time and a place in the final. Mind you, this was all loosely officiated and totally fun - in the photo below I'm being passed a mug of beer - but I can't hold in my competitiveness and I worked for it. I ended up third in the final and won a magnum of Merlot from Washington State. For everyone who was there, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the show! And a big thank you for Athletepath for putting it on.
