Columbia Triathlon and Why I Didn't Race

This past weekend was the 30th Annual Columbia Triathlon. This is a hard and hilly olympic distance race and one that I have won twice. So why wasn't I racing this year?

The obvious reason is this:

But didn't I just race a duathlon last week? Yes, I did, and I also set a goal for myself back in December that Columbia was going to be my first post-baby triathlon. That was back when I was convinced that Amy was going to arrive in early January (she wasn't born until Jan. 21) and I didn't know I was going to have a c-section.

Over the last few months, I've realized that recovery takes time. It would be magical if I was able to snap back into shape instantly (like some people seem to do), but everyone is different. I'm just taking my time and letting things come back naturally.

I do have every intention of racing again and being competitive with the top athletes in the sport. Having a baby hasn't changed that one bit. It actually has made me even more hungry as a competitor. But Kona/Hy-Vee points and prize money aren't awarded for racing back to the starting line after having a baby.

They are awarded to people like Laurel, Meredith Kessler, Nicki Samuels and Angela Naeth who all raced brilliantly in Columbia yesterday.
