Running to Remember Lauren

Last Saturday one of our friends, Lauren Beam, lost her fight with colon cancer. We met Lauren through Chelsea Piers, where she worked and also worked out. We were also neighbors in the West Village. Lauren was a standout athlete, I think I remember her telling me she was a state champion in swimming AND cross country. She swam and won many titles as a breaststroker at NYU. For the last several years she has been the head coach of the NYU Women's swim team and they have had incredible success under her leadership. For good reason, she was named coach of the year the last few years by her conference. Lauren was also a triathlete and competed and did well in many races. I remember seeing results and thinking, she is fast. She could be a pro! On top of athletics, Lauren was an exceptional friend. One of those people who genuinely listens and laughs and makes you feel good. When she was diagnosed two years ago, everyone was shocked but knew she'd FIGHT LIKE HELL. She did and made it as far as she could. Bec and I will be remembering her and racing in her honor this weekend. We will miss the run her family is organizing in Central Park and the NYU memorial service on Sunday, but we will be back in time to do another run.
We would like to invite everyone who reads this to PLEASE JOIN US on Sunday at 6pm at Niketown in NYC for a 5 mile run through the city. Run to honor Lauren and others like her and to show your support for LIVESTRONG. Lance will be there too!
In the meantime, tack on this little set to the end of your workout. Lauren told me once that it was one of her favorites.

12x125 pull w/paddles (adds up to 1500)

Thank you for reading, and for those who can make it to the run, thank you in advance. It may be crowded so we may not get to thank you in person.

PS- the photo above is from a story that Sarah wrote about Lauren for Competitor. We spent the afternoon on the UES chatting and taking picks in a park. The tee shirt is one of my all time favorites from the NIKE/LIVESTRONG collection. A new favorite is the one that will be debuting this week -- FIGHT LIKE HELL.
