Athlete food is a collection of recipes for active people, created by athletes and designed for the inner athlete in all of us. We all wish we could eat whatever we want, whenever we want. But eating a breakfast burrito before a morning spin class or a BLT before a tennis match or skipping lunch before a mom and me swim classβ¦none of these things make us feel our best. Believe us, weβve been there. With over 10 years of competing behind us, weβve had plenty of time to figure out what foods work and which leave us wondering, "Why did I eat that?"
We started this blog, along with our good friend and food writer, Melissa, to share our experiences with fueling an active lifestyle. Our friends and family wanted to know: What do you eat before a workout? How do you refuel? How do you fit cooking into your jam-packed schedules? The short answer is REAL food β not just boiled chicken breasts and packaged energy bars β and a lot of it! Take a look at our recipes and youβll see that we indulge in sweets, we experiment with the latest superfoods, and we pack as many nutrients as we can into our healthy dinners.
Our recipes are simple enough to entice a novice or non-cook, but interesting enough for an experienced one. We strive for flavor, taste, and above all, meals and snacks that are going to make us ready to take on the day β whether that means training for an Ironman, being a full-time mom, or tackling a to-do list a mile long.
There are three of us β Laurel and Rebeccah Wassner and Melissa Lasher. Laurel and Rebeccah are twins and professional athletes and Melissa is a food writer. We go way back. Laurel and Melissa met on a plane to Italy when Laurel was bald from chemotherapy. They immediately bonded over their love for travel, the outdoors, and food, and have become lifelong friends.
Oh yes! Laurel is currently training for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. She will be the first cancer survivor to compete at this prestigious race as a professional (October 2015). Rebeccah had top finishes in the first part of the 2015 season, highlighted by an overall win (as in she beat all the girlsβ¦and boys!) at the Montauk Triathlon. She will be taking the rest of the year off to have have baby #2 in January 2016.
We travel the globe, competing in 10 to 15 competitions a year. Triathlon racing is our full-time job. You can follow our racing endeavors on our triathlon website www.wassnertwins.com.
Melissaβs an active mom who prefers hiking and swimming over cutthroat competition, but she completes a daily triathlon managing her three little kids.
Melissa is a food writer (sheβs written for Runnerβs World, The San Francisco Chronicle, Backpacker, The New York Times, and more) and attended Tante Marieβs Cooking School in San Francisco.
Rebeccah started cooking family dinners when she was ten years old. She has been an accountant for Amyβs Bread for over ten years; and when she first took the job, her desk was feet from the oven.
Laurel admits that, until recently, cooking made her more nervous than a nine-hour endurance race. Athlete Food's easy recipes lured her into the kitchen. Now she makes her own energy bars and inspires others to eat healthy foods on her popular Instagram feed (@athletestyle).
Weβre all over the map. Nashville, New York City, New Paltz, NY and Santa Monica.
